Stream over broadband from a Windows Vista or Windows XP Server on a PC to a PC, laptop, EeePC, MID or UMPC running Vista or XP

BEFORE you try to stream a game from a Windows PC to another Windows PC over a broadband connection make sure you have done the following

  • Downloaded and installed our Windows Server and Player software available here

  • Read how to set up and configure the hardware and Firewall of both your Windows Server and Windows Player PCs here

  • Checked your Windows Firewall settings here

  • Read our Getting Started section here

  • Recorded a video of a game on your Server computer to make sure it is recording correctly

  • Played the video recording of a game on your Server Computer

  • Played the video recording of a game on the PC that will play the game. You can download some recordings of games here

If you have done the above and everything works your hardware and games are compatible with StreamMyGame's broadband services.

To Stream a game from a Windows PC to another Windows PC over broadband you need to do the following;

  • Have sufficient uplink bandwidth on your broadband connection

  • Configuring the router at your Server. You only need to do this once.

  • You cannot stream over broadband to the same IP address or via the same router (i.e. the Server PC and the Player PC need to be at different locations)

How much Uplink bandwidth do you need?

The faster the uplink from the Server PC to the exchange, the higher the resolution can be sent. The quality of the broadband link also effects the lag you experience.

Most broadband networks have a far greater Downlink speed than Uplink. When streaming a game over broadband, the Uplink speed determines the maximum resolution that can be streamed.

The following table shows what is typically achieved over broadband networks.

Broadband Uplink Bandwidth Game Stream Video Resolution
  256Kbs 320x240
  512Kbs 400x300
  1Mbs 640x480
  2Mbs 800x600
  4Mbs 1024x768
  8Mbs HDTV 720p
  10Mbs HDTV 1080p
  100Mbs 3200x2400 Film quality

New broadband services such as ADSL2, ADSL2+, VDSL2, Cable, Fibre to the Home (FiOS), and Ethernet to the Home (EttH) can now offer sufficient speeds to stream games both nationally and internationally however you will get the best experience by streaming to someone who lives close to you.

The following is a list of just some of the major networks that can run StreamMyGame at higher resolutions.

A example of configuring a router at the Server and Streaming Over Broadband

To Stream over broadband you only need to configure the router connected to the StreamMyGame Server.

Most home routers can be accessed through your browser by simply typing 192.168.2.1 in your browser.

If this does not work, look in your router/ISP manual. StreamMyGame needs you to set up the following...

The StreamMyGame Server needs inbound ports 55082 to 55090 UDP and TCP

You have to specify the IP address of the Server.

In the example below a gamer in one location called Alice wants to play her game Crysis in another location.

Alice has a game installed on her PC which is connected to a broadband connection with a fast Uplink.

She needs to find out what the IP address of her PC is by opening a Command Prompt and typing "ipconfig". (You can find the Command Prompt on XP in Start/Accessories/Command Prompt).

Her computer IP address is 192.168.1.10 so she configures his router like this

Alice has a Linksys Router and the setup screen looks like this. Notice that this router enables her to set a Type as Both UDP and TCP.

Here is an example of a Belkin Router setup screen.   Notice that t his router does not have an option to set the Type as Both, so he has to set up a seperate option for UPD and TCP. Also the Belkin router has an additional Private Port option which you need to set the same as the inbound ports.

Alice can now go to her friend Bobs house and play her games remotely. At Bobs house Alice goes to www.StreamMyGame.com and logs in with her Username and Password.

She presses the "Your Home" button

and then the Your Games button

She then presses the Broadcast button

and then presses the Big Broadcast button

The StreamMyGame Windows Player will open and display the following message

Alice logins in with her Username and Password

The game will now start on Alice's Server PC at her home and be sent over broadband and displayed on Bobs PC.

Note: If the display is pixilated or black it might mean that you do not have enough connection speed on your broadband. You can see how much data is being received by looking at the bottom left corner which displays "Packets Received".

The game is now displayed.

Now when Alice clicks with her mouse anywhere on the Player display and she will be able to control the game mouse from Bobs house. To get back to a Windows mouse she presses and holds her keyboard Esc key for 4 seconds. To get control of the game again she just clicks anywhere on the Player display.

She can also switch between Windowed and Full Screen mode with this button and change the Aspect Ratio with this button

Some computer games, such as Counter Strike, switch the audio input to microphone when they start so you can use it for in game audio. This stops StreamMyGame from being able to access the audio. If you cannot hear any audio, press the Audio Switch button   on the Player and wait for 3 seconds. Each time you press the Audio Button it will switch the audio Recording Input of the Server. Keep pressing it until you hear audio.

When she wants to stop playing the game, she quits it just as she would normally. After the game has stopped the player will still be open, after 30 seconds it will time-out and close. If she wants to close it before the timeout she just presses the Esc key to display your Windows mouse and then close the player.

An example of adding a friend to your Group and letting them use your games

You can learn more about Groups here.

Alice wants to let her friend Bob play one of her games. To do this she must add Bob to her Group.

Alice has already formed a group called "AlicesGroup"

and she adds her game Crysis to her group by pressing "Yours Games" and the "Add" button next to the game.

She tells Bob the name of her group by sending him a Private Message.

Bob searches "Alice" with the StreamMyGame Search Engine

and applies to Join her group "AlicesGroup" by pressing the "View" button

and then presses the Join button.

The following message is displayed to Bob.

Bobs sends a Private Message back to Alice and says he has requested to Join her group AlicesGroup.

Alice presses her Groups button

and sees Bobs request to Join.

She presses the "1 outstanding" button and Accepts Bobs request to Join.

Now Bob is a member of AlicesGroup he can see her group in his Groups page.

To play a game in AlicesGroup Bob scrolls down the page and selects the Broadband button in Games in AlicesGroup

He then presses the Big Broadcast button

The game on Alice's Server PC in her home now starts and is sent over broadband to Bob's house.

Bobs Player opens and displayes the following.

Bob logs in with his own Username and Password.

He can now see Alice's game on his Player.

However when Bob starts playing he notices that there is no audio. He realizes that Alice has just finished playing Counter Strike and the audio record input on her Server has been set to Microphone.

Bob presses the Switch Server Audio button which switches the audio on Alices's Server until he can hear audio.

When Bob has finished playing he just quits the game as he would normally and after 30 seconds his Player will close. At Alice's house the games closes and here StreamMyGame Server displays

Now Bob has finished, any other member of AlicesGroup can play the game.

REMEMBER : Games that have been added to Groups are accessed via the Groups page.
